1:1 Music Lessons

Ami Dang has openings available for private instruction in:

  • sitar
  • voice (North Indian classical, pop, rock, and/or experimental technique)
  • music production and composition using electronic media

Students may also pursue more than one instrument or focus. Instruction in playing harmonium as an accompanying instrument is also available to students who take voice lessons with a focus on North Indian classical and/or Sikh music.

Lessons take place virtually or in her teaching studio in Baltimore.

ABOUT

Amrita “Ami” Kaur Dang (she/her) is a diverse multi-instrumentalist who has been teaching, performing, composing, and recording original music for over 15 years. She offers private instruction in sitar, voice (Indian classical, Sikh, pop/rock, and experimental styles), and music production and composition with electronic media. As a teacher, she is caring, patient, and dedicated. She works with her students to develop proper technique to allow them freedom to play the style they wish, tailoring the lessons to the needs and abilities of her students. She was formerly a Visiting Assistant Professor of Computer Music and Digital Arts at Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

As a creative artist, Ms. Dang has performed in North America, Asia, Europe, and South America and has released five solo albums. She has received two Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council, and she is a 2020 Baker Artist Award winner. Her work has received accolades from The Guardian, The Washington Post, Spin, and Pitchfork, to name a few.

Ms. Dang holds a bachelor’s degree in Technology in Music & Related Arts from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and she studied voice and sitar in New Delhi and Maryland from a young age. She has composed original music and sound design for INSeries Opera, Ableton, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company and dancer/performance artist Tarren Johnson, to name a few. She has performed with and collaborated with artists across genres, including Animal Collective, Sonny Singh, INSeries Opera, and many more.

FAQ

Question: I'm sick / I have a conflict and can't attend my lesson! Is it possible to get a refund, or may I make up the lesson?

Answer: Lessons canceled or missed by the student with less than 24 hours' notice will not be rescheduled or be refunded. If a student who typically takes lessons in person wants to pivot to a virtual lesson during their scheduled time slot, they may do so with at least 60 minutes' notice.

Lessons canceled with more than 24 hours' notice will be given a make-up lesson credit to use within 14 days at specific time frames indicated by Ms. Dang. All make-up lessons will be held virtually, subject to Ms. Dang's availability.

Question: What kind of payments do you accept? 

Answer: Ms. Dang is able to accept cash, check, Zelle, Paypal and Venmo. Payment methods are subject to change at any time.

Question: When do I need to pay for my lesson?

Answer: Payment is due (at minimum) one week before a lesson unless other arrangements have been made. Monthly invoices will be sent on/about the 20th of each month for the subsequent month.

Question: I'm confused about something Ms. Dang assigned to practice, or I need to contact Ms. Dang in between lessons. What do I do?

Answer: Call or sent a text message to Ms. Dang at the number provided on your invoice. If she does not answer, she will return your call at her earliest convenience (at most, within 24 hours). For instructional help, she may contact you using a video call.
